Welcome to Serendipity & Salt, my mostly food blog. I’m Sara, a 28 year old chef from California with a lot to say about a whole lot of nothing. My husband is a very well fed software engineer, and our 6 year old pup Harley is the head of the household. We live in San Diego, where we were born and raised, and just can’t seem to get enough of. I graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Business Management and concentration in Entrepreneurship, and then attended the International Culinary Center, where I studied classical French technique, and was part of the first California Farm to Table program. I am still trying to figure out how my background and education fits together, but for now, I’ll just keep cooking.
The best things in life are those that happen in moments of serendipity, the happy accidents and pleasant surprises you find when you least expect it; like cooking something new that turns out perfect, or the delicate shattering of finishing salt on your sourdough toast. It’s those gentle reminders we aren’t looking for that tell us we’re right where we’re supposed to be, even if it is just in that moment. I thrive on these little bites of serendipity because let’s be honest, do any of us know what we’re doing?
I was taught in culinary school that salt not a spice, but a flavor enhancer: it takes a simple ingredient and brings that flavor to life. There is so much satisfaction in creating a perfectly seasoned dish, and sometimes having to push the boundaries to find it. Serendipity is to life what salt is to food. Serendipity & Salt enhance the flavors of life and without either, there’s no purpose. That’s how I feel, at least.
